Kitting out your team before the cold weather bites

As we’re getting towards the end of the summer and the evenings start to draw in, the time has come to consider the types of outdoor workwear you’ll need to keep your staff safe and warm over the autumn and winter. Outdoor workers often face difficult working conditions over the cold period, with low visibility, adverse weather, freezing temperatures and the dangers of slips and falls on snow and ice all risks they have to face.

Whether they’re working on a building site, warehouse, dock or as car park attendants, seeing that your outdoor staff are well kitted out in the best outdoor workwear is key to keeping them safe over the winter. This is about far more than simply throwing on another layer. Outdoor workwear needs to be water-resistant, warm and hard-wearing, and you need to consider the complete package from head to foot.

Body warmers and fleece vests can be a good starting place, with a close fitting Dickies Base Layer vest, for example, offering a less bulky but extremely warm underlayer. On top of that, thermal or waterproof jackets, such as a Lee Cooper Bonded Softshell jacket, add an extra layer of defence against the cold and help ensure workers are protected from the elements.

Insulated gloves can protect against frostbite and extreme cold, with half finger gloves such as those manufactured by Dickies giving workers greater flexibility and ease of movement. Thicker pairs of gloves such as the Thinsulate-lined Portwest fleece gloves are a better choice for those not working with their hands, while thermal socks can also help protect against the worst the weather can throw at you.

Choosing the right footwear is key if you want to prevent slips on ice and snow. Finding footwear which is warm, waterproof and provides good grip is important, with boots such as the Dunlop Comfort Grip Safety Wellington or other safety boots from our range providing extra protection and a better footing for those working outdoors in poor weather.

When buying your outdoor workwear it’s important to take into consideration the nature of the work your staff will be carrying out and choose workwear which is appropriate. To get your outdoor team kitted out ahead of the cold spell, browse our catalogue today or give us a call for more advice.
