One size does not fit all: the dangers of improperly sized protective workwear

3 October 2016  |  Geoff

You may believe that you don’t have to consider the size of the garments when picking out protective clothing. After all, protective clothing (such as flame retardant workwear) is often designed to accommodate as many different body-types as possible in order to provide the maximum level of protection for all wearers. However, despite its generous sizing, it’s actually very important to choose the best possible fit when selecting protective workwear.

Here at Total Workwear, we offer protective workwear garments in a variety of sizes so that you can pick the ones that are appropriate for you or your employees.

But why is it so important to purchase protective garments in the correct size?
Firstly, it’s worth noting that protective clothing which is too small can endanger you or your employees. If a protective garment does not cover a worker’s body completely, it can not offer complete protection: it leaves part of the worker’s body exposed and vulnerable. Workwear that is too small can also restrict a worker’s movement, which can put them in danger in a hazardous environment. Remember that workers need to be able to move freely in potentially-dangerous workplaces (such as oil rigs, steel mills or industrial factories) because they need to be able to move away from developing problems and threats before they can be harmed.

Excessively large protective workwear can also be dangerous, simply because the extra material can get in a worker’s way, trip them up and general obstruct them as they attempt to carry out their duties. This can be a serious problem for workers who have to carry out hazardous tasks that require a high level of manual dexterity and which have to be undertaken with the utmost care. Oversized workwear might look comical, but it’s no laughing matter - it can endanger you or your workforce.

Here at Total Workwear, we offer protective clothing and uniforms in a wide range of sizes, so make sure you choose the sizes that are right for you or your employees.

When it comes to protecting workers in dangerous environments, one size does not fit all.
