The workwear you see on Coronation Street

13 October 2016  |  Geoff

Coronation Street first hit screens in 1960 and has since become the nation’s most loved soap. During its near six-decade span, we’ve seen many colourful characters and over-the-top storylines. We’ve also seen many businesses emerge on the cobbles. But have you ever stopped to consider what the employees are wearing? Here’s a look at some of the workwear you see on Coronation Street.

Nick’s Bistro

Heartthrob Nick Tilsley – played by Ben Price – opened his very own bistro in 2010. It has since become the number one spot for a fancy meal on the cobbles. Over the years we’ve seen many chefs in the kitchen, including fellow characters Robert Preston and Zeedan Nazir. Since these guys work in food preparation, you often see them kitted out in chef’s whites.

Roy’s Rolls

Loveable Roy Cropper – played by David Neilson – bought his café in 1997. Since then staff have come and gone, but Roy has remained a permanent fixture. Whenever you see Roy – or his right hand woman Anna Windass – both are usually donning their trusted aprons. It is these aprons that allow them to go about their job without fear of their clothes getting ruined with grease or spillages.

The Builder's Yard

The Builder's Yard has switched hands many times over the years, with the likes of Owen Armstrong and Charlie Stubbs holding the keys. These days the site is actually owned by Jason Grimshaw, who was played by Ryan Thomas prior to his departure. Since the builders work with heavy equipment and power tools, you often see them wearing specialist gear to keep safe. You also see them wearing hi-vis jackets so that they stand out to each other. Without such jackets, there could be an accident waiting to happen.

Webster’s Autocentre

The garage is owned by Kevin Webster and Tyrone Dobbs, played by Michael Le Vell and Alan Halsall respectively. These two are often kitted up in overalls to avoid staining their clothes with oil and other messy substances of that nature.

Clothing to keep safe in

The wardrobe department has put a lot of thought into what the characters in Coronation Street wear. Most of the threads the characters wear (or similar garments) are available to buy online.
