Exploring the BOA Lacing System: Revolutionising Footwear Technology

What is the BOA Lacing System?

The BOA lacing system is a smart system to pull on or take off your safety shoes or boots. It is an alternative to classic laces whereby they are replaced by stainless steel wires, connected to a turning knob. This knob is used to tighten, loosen, and snap your laces into place. As with many innovative technologies and systems, the BOA lacing system has its roots from the sports industry. For a very long time, the system was being used exclusively by snowboarders, mountaineers, golfers, and cyclists. However, the innovative laces are now occurring more frequently in personal protective equipment such as safety shoes or firemen’s boots.

How does it work?

Using the BOA lacing system is really simple. By turning the knob, you tighten or loosen your laces. The pressure gets evenly distributed on your safety shoe. By turning the knob all the way up, you loosen the shoe entirely; this is known as the quick-release function. In addition to the push/pull principle, the BOA knob repels sand, oils, mud, and other dirty materials. This means that if you are wearing safety gloves, you don’t need to take them off to tighten your laces.

The benefit of this configuration over traditional lacing systems is that when you tighten the dial, the laces can be tightened far more than traditional laces and creates a fit that almost hugs the feet. This also benefits the footwear in the long run, expanding their overall lifespan by putting less strain on the uppers.
